I had this friend for many years. She is an African American just like me. My grandfather was of German descent. Her grandfather was not. She not too yellow, but I guess I am.
I just thought we were friends, until I wrote this simple little play for Black History Month. I used the term girl in the reenactment of Rosa Parks's arrest.
When it was suggested that I edit the term from the play, I wanted to know why. She said,"People your color don't get it, because you have not suffered discrimination."
Rosa Parks's mugshots flashed through my mind. Was she too yellow?
